As someone who hates waste and will thrift just about anything…I don’t think you’re weird AT ALL. I may try your shower bucket idea for toilet flushing! This might seem odd but, if I hear my husband using the toilet and I’m going to use it right after, I tell him not to flush so we flush just once (only with # 1 of course.) I use the fabric napkins and tea towels also 👍🏼

i live in a LARGE family, cutting costs is what we do, second hand is the name of the game here. other than the underwear. it's second hand, and yes the drinking cups too. everything gets a washing, a vacuuming, a spray down. what ever it needs before it comes into the house. it's really not that hard to recycle things. people are just trained from an early age to not to because it's all about money. if you really want to protect the planet though, go plant 10 trees for every year you're alive. that will really help the planet more than recycling, because 80% of plastic you send to recycling doesn't get recycled, it just ends up in the dump anyhow.

When I lived on an island in my 20s and only had rain water to use for everything I'd scoop out the washing machine water from the laundry tub and race off to water my gardens and race back again to scoop out another bucket or 2 before the tub overflowed. I became very fit 😂

The example you shared from that retreat is also so deeply rooted in ableism. They don’t want to be using mobility aids partially because of the aesthetic and their pity

I've always rewashed plastic bags. Watched mum do it so I did too. Mum would always use old (clean 😂) underwear and dad's old singlets as dust/cleaning rags. I sewed some soap bags out of face/wash cloths and put bits of soap in them to use. I sew cross body bags/shoulder bags out of old curtain material. My whole life I've had 2nd hand sheets and towels but I did buy new towels last year 😊 at 64 yrs old I'm so excited to have new towels 😂 I gave my old ripped and stained towels to a local mechanic who loved them for his greasy hands!!

I cannot do second-hand sandals and underwear, otherwise I'm fine with second hand clothing.

I love saving money so being less wasteful just goes along with it. I donate what I dont need or use, and I shop at thrift stores.

Omg I thought it was just me but I pick up hair ties never put them in the freezer though so will do that from now on.

I quit bar soap, I just put a mister bottle with diluted dish soqp by the sink and use horse shampoo as body wash.

I get a lot of surprised looks when I tell people I have a worm composting system set up in my basement. I live in an urban area of a large city, and have a small garden. Decided I wanted to be more sustainable with food, and because I didn’t want to deal with animals getting into my waste, decided to move operations indoors. Now I am growing vegetables with my own worm castings and tea.

For the soap in my house we would just stick that little bit of old soap onto the new bar and it gets used first that way No waste and much less work than melting them down haha

When I find something to thrift, I look at the item itself to see if it works for me- no matter what it is. Example: my thrift was selling .99 panties that were brand new- just removed from a package. Always wash first.

If I buy a gallon of water from the store I save the jug and refill the jug in the creak

As someone who uses disposable products with regularity but is often tight on money, I actually appreciated a lot of the habits you laid out. I might try a few of them (and go back to doing some like the rags instead of paper towels). I very much like the idea of spending less and having fewer bags of garbage to throw out, even if I don’t feel the need to be 100% minimal.

My great grandparents lived through the American depression, and raised their daughters on a dairy farm. My mother was raised just across the street from their retirement acre. Most of these are just normal ways to save money and "waste not, want not". Not weird.😁

My sister tries to break me from my habit of collecting hair ties. I do all of these.

When I lived in San Francisco, I often found clothes dumped in piles on the street. I’d seal them in garbage bags and take them home to wash in very hot water .Then I’d donate them, and even kept some favorite items.

I use a cup and washable pads… but I still have a bin. When I just pee, I prefer to through away the toilet paper in a bin and that way save loads of water… Yeah, people think I’m crazy. And I have a shower bucket too. And I pick up hair ties all the time as well. 😅

What are your thoughts on meat farmed ethically and sustainably through regenerative agriculture? I’d also love to hear your thoughts on hunting for food? A great many American hunts for wild game to fill their freezers for the year. In exchange, the money from licensing goes to further conservation of habitat and research. Possible future video??

I have a bucket in my shower, but what I do is soak myself, wash my face/hair while the bucket fills, rinse soap off and then turn off the water. Soap myself up, scrub my back, etc, using the bucket whenever I need water for the cloth. Rinse the cloth out in it, dump the bucket, turn back on the water and rinse myself off. So I don't end up saving the bucket of water for anything after the shower, though I suppose I could use it for a toilet flush. But it means I can take my time with scrubbing elbows/feet/back without wasting water, which seems to be the point of your bucket. (I probably waste more water than you, though.) Neat ideas! It's always good to challenge what you find "gross" and ask yourself if it *is* gross or just *unfamiliar.*

9:47 Why would you state " I don't have paper towels"? Why not just offer them a cloth one without putting the emphasis on the fact they ask for the "wrong" thing?

A few of my friends have started sewing reusable toilet "paper" with old towels (akin to makeup removing wipes), for pee only. keep them in a semi-closed jar with bicarbonate of soda and they don't smell, can be washed at 60°C, and reduce by a heckton the disposable toilet paper used. Also, composting toilets as soon as you have the space to dispose of the compost. They both raise eyebrows the first time, but they make so much sense.

I think the only thing I don't get second hand is underwear, unless it's from someone I know. I'm not sure the rule makes sense logically, but it works for me xD. Also leggings, but that's because I've never found a pair of non saggy non torn leggings second hand. And it is a biig source of frustration.

We had a burger fair a few days ago where I live and I had the most delicious vegan burger! Waaay netter than any beef has ever been!
